South Bruce Peninsula will move ahead with a 0% tax increase this year.
After making several high-profile decisions, like bringing back paid parking in Sauble Beach and cutting funding for the Wiarton-Keppel Airport, Mayor Janice Jackson says they were able to prevent an increase without cutting services.
"We also cut back on money that was, historically, just given away." Jackson tells CKNX. "There were grants to chambers and grants to different groups that we either eliminated or cut. Our council doesn't feel it is our place to be donating taxpayer money."
Council has budgeted for around $100,000 of revenue to come through paid parking at Sauble, after voting to bring it back last year.
In the meantime, the municipality has cut funding to the jointly-owned Wiarton-Keppel Airport in half, rejecting a proposal to extend the airport manager's contract.
"We've also reduced funding to the Wiarton-Keppel Airport. Until it's decided which direction we are going in, we wanted to at least cut down on our loses," Jackson says about the strip which is in need of repair to keep it to Transport Canada standards.
The airport, which is also owned by the Township of Georgian Bluffs, could close at the end of the month if a monetary agreement between the two groups is not met.
While many sectors have been cut, Jackson says they have increased their roads budget by 40% after fielding numerous complaints from residents.
