Jailbreak Inn Will Open In Former Walkerton Jail

It appears the former Walkerton Jail will house guests again, but these ones will be on the right side of the law.

Bruce County council has directed staff to work with CHEROS Enterprise on a long-term lease of the jail property, which will become a hotel and special events venue called the Jailbreak Inn.

Co-owner Rosemary Gowans says they will also have a restaurant, gift shops, and tours of the 148-year-old former jail, as well as local entertainment in the courtyard.

She says their vision is to keep the jail property as original as possible, which means overnight guests will be staying in the jail cells.

"We'll make it comfortable, but it will be a jail cell. It's the actual cells. We want to keep the integrity and charm of the historical building, so we don't want to change that," says Gowans.

As long as the planning and lease negotiations move ahead without an issue, Gowans says they are aiming to be open by late May.
