Bluewater Faces Committee Dilemma

Bluewater council has deferred a request by two community groups to become committees of council. The Bayfield Arena Community Partners had made the request so they would be covered under the municipality's insurance.

Members of the Hay Township Hall Committee assumed they already were a committee of council but Mayor Tyler Hessel explains there is no bylaw supporting that.

He adds council is concerned about the amount of liability the municipality would be assuming and the precedent it would be setting for other groups wanting the same standing.

Hessel suggests one solution might be to have the two organizations request a grant equal to the annual cost of their insurance. But he says council will make a decision after staff reviews the situation and brings back a report.

Hessel adds if it's determined that it would be easier to have the groups request a grant to cover their insurance premiums council would have to establish a clear policy for awarding grants.
