The Joint Review Panel has heard all it needs to hear regarding Ontario Power Generation's proposed deep geologic repository for low-and-intermediate level nuclear waste.
The panel declared the record closed on Tuesday, meaning it will no longer accept new information and will now begin preparing its final recommendations to the federal Minister of the Environment, who will ultimately determine the fate of the DGR proposed for the Bruce nuclear site.
Due to the sheer volume and complexity of the information provided to the panel, it has stated it will not be able to meet the 90-day deadline typically required for Joint Review Panel decisions and instead will deliver its decision by May 6, 2015.
If approved, OPG would construct the DGR to permanently store about 200,000 cubic metres of nuclear waste nearly 700m below the surface of the Bruce nuclear site.
