Huron County Questions Labour Study

A study announced recently by the Four County Labour Market Planning Board raised some questions at Huron County council on Wednesday.

The board covers Grey, Bruce, Huron and Perth and the report shows a loss of jobs in Huron County that is considerably higher than the number of jobs in the other three counties.

Huron Planning Director Scott Tousaw told council he would be seeking clarification on some of the information contained in the report.

He pointed to the fact that at least two-thirds of the jobs said to be lost in Huron were businesses with no employees. Tousaw suggested those could have been registrations that expired without ever starting up or becoming operating businesses.

Tousaw also pointed out that some of the lost jobs were in the agricultural sector, but farm amalgamation is an on-going process in agricultural communities like Huron. He adds when one farm is sold to another, it becomes a lost farm on paper but in fact it's not lost.

Tousaw says he'll report back to Huron County council as soon as he gets clarification.
