4-H Canada launches new fundraising campaign for youth development

4-H Canada recently launched a fundraising initiative aimed at securing the future of its renowned youth development programs. With a goal of raising $1 million, the campaign, called Tomorrow Needs 4-H, aims to ensure that young Canadians continue to benefit from the organization’s decades-long work in rural and agricultural communities.

Founded in Canada in 1913, 4-H has grown to include over 900 clubs across the country, offering a range of activities that go far beyond its early agricultural focus. Though 4-H is widely recognized for its iconic livestock competitions, particularly in rural areas, its scope has expanded to urban areas, encompassing projects like car care, sewing, and gardening.

A critical part of the 4-H experience is the emphasis on building a well-rounded skill set that serves participants for life. Public speaking, leadership, and responsibility are key areas of development, giving young people the tools they need to thrive in both their personal and professional lives. Employers often look favorably on job applicants who have 4-H membership on their resumes, appreciating the program’s focus on completing projects and fostering accountability.

Moreover, 4-H plays a crucial role in bridging the rural-urban divide that can often hinder understanding of agriculture's importance in the broader economy. The organization’s youth programs are designed to create confident communicators who can effectively advocate for agricultural interests in increasingly diverse settings.

In rural communities, 4-H is a unifying force. With the current trend of fewer farmers and the increasing average age of those in the industry, programs like 4-H are vital in ensuring the sustainability of the agriculture sector.

However, like many organizations, 4-H faces financial challenges, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Farm Credit Canada has already committed to matching donations up to $50,000, emphasizing the broader industry's recognition of 4-H’s value.
