SIU probing London robbery suspect's serious injury

The province's police watchdog is investigating after a robbery suspect was seriously hurt during an arrest by London police.

Police were called about the robbery at a business on Wellington Road South around 3 p.m. on Monday. Before officers arrived on scene, the man took off from the unnamed business in a vehicle.

A search of the area by officers and the police canine unit turned up the vehicle, which was empty, a short distance away. A canine officer was used to track, locate, and arrest a suspect.

As a result of the interaction the suspect, a 34-year-old man, suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries, police said in a statement issued on Thursday. The man was taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been released and is charged with armed robbery and dangerous driving.

Police did not name the business that was targeted or what type of weapon was used.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified because of the man's injury and has invoked its mandate. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
