14-year-old charged in mass shooting that killed Woodstock man

A 14-year-old has been accused in a mass shooting earlier this month that left a Woodstock man dead.

Delroy "George" Parkes, 61, of Woodstock was among a group of nine men who had gathered in the parking lot of North Albion Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke after a soccer game on June 2. According to Toronto police, as the men socialized a dark coloured pickup truck pulled up, two people got out and started shooting before taking off.

Parkes, a husband and father of seven, was one of five men hit by the gunfire. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Seymour Gibbs, 46, of Toronto was also taken to hospital where he died from his injuries three days after the incident.

The three others who were wounded suffered injuries considered life-altering.

Hours after the shooting, a stolen truck hit an empty parked vehicle in the same area. The driver, a youth, tried to run from police on foot, but after a short chase was arrested. Investigators determined the youth was one of the suspects involved in the shooting, police said.

A 14-year-old, who cannot be named because of his age, is charged with two counts of first degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder in relation to the mass shooting. He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Police are still looking for at least one other suspect. A description of that individual has not been provided.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown, police said.
