Block of Dundas Street downtown closed for construction

There is a new annoyance for drivers whose commute takes them through downtown London.

Starting Monday, Dundas Street between Waterloo and Wellington streets will be closed for three weeks. This is to allow construction crews to continue work on Phase 3 of the bus rapid transit (BRT) downtown loop.

Signage is in place to detour drivers using Waterloo Street, Queens Avenue, and Wellington Street.

"People driving east and west on Dundas Street are advised to follow detour signs and use alternative routes, when possible, to reach their destination," the city said in a statement. "People travelling through the area should expect delays."

The work will also see the bike lanes between Waterloo and Wellington temporarily closed. Due to this, cyclists will have to dismount and walk through the Dundas and Wellington intersection. Cyclists heading east-west on Dundas will not have to use a detour and instead will be directed through the road closure to safely connect to the Dundas Street bike path.

The sidewalk on at least one side of Dundas and through the Wellington intersection will remain open for pedestrians and access to businesses will also be maintained.

The closure is scheduled to last until July 5.

The downtown loop adds dedicated bus lanes and enhanced transit stops to streets. Phase 1 of the project was built in 2021 on King Street between Ridout and Wellington Streets. Phase 2 happened between March and December of 2022 and saw many temporary intersection closures, lane restrictions and, at times, around-the-clock construction.
