The Children's Aid Society has been notified after a three-year-old child was found inside a running vehicle south of St. Thomas with an alleged impaired driver unconscious behind the wheel.
Elgin OPP were called to investigate the vehicle sitting on Sparta Line east of Centennial Road in Central Elgin around 9:30 p.m. last Friday. Officers arrived on scene and while speaking with the driver, observed signs of intoxication, police said.
The driver was arrested without incident and taken to St. Thomas police headquarters for a sobriety test. While there, the driver is said to have refused to provide a breath sample and assaulted a police officer.
A 25-year-old Woodstock man is charged with driving while impaired by alcohol and drugs and refusal to comply with demand. He has had his driver's licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for a week.
According to police, a family member was called to pick up the child who was in the vehicle at the time. As well, the Children's Aid Society of Oxford County was contacted about the incident.
