Online scam costs St. Thomas resident $50K

A St. Thomas resident has lost $50,000 after falling victim to a scam about an online purchase.

St. Thomas police were told the individual received a phone call regarding the purchase. They were instructed to click a link that was sent to them in order to dispute the purchase.

When the resident did as instructed it provided the scammer access to their computer and their banking information. Using that, the scammer was able to steal $50,000 from the resident, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
