Arson charge laid in St. Thomas hydro pole fire

A 42-year-old man is accused of intentionally setting a hydro pole near downtown St. Thomas on fire.

Emergency crews were called about the blaze on St. Catharine Street Saturday afternoon. Firefighters were able to quickly douse the flames.

Fire officials and St. Thomas police determined the fire had been set on purpose. Through further investigation, police identified a suspect.

A 42-year-old man, who had recently moved to the city, was arrested and charged with arson.

Following the man's arrest, police discovered he was wanted by Perth County OPP in relation to an unrelated matter. Police offered no specifics about that matter.

The man has been released from police custody with future court dates.
