Dozens of Port Stanley residents told to boil their water

Bacteria found during routine testing has led to a boil water advisory for roughly 30 households in Port Stanley.

Southwestern Public Health was notified on Tuesday that the water testing had found the presence of bacteria in the Central Elgin Distribution System. That prompted the region's Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran to issue the advisory to those living between Mackenzie Lane (formally Edith Street) and the west end of George Street.

Health unit officials went door-to-door to notify residents.

People living in the affected area are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking it, making infant formula and juice, brushing teeth, washing raw foods, and making ice.

The boil water advisory will remain in place until bacteriological tests prove the water to be safe. According to the health unit, two samples, taken 24 hours apart, must come back negative for bacteria for that to happen.

Additional information about boil water advisories can be found on the health unit's website at https://www.swpublichealth.ca/en/community-health/boil-water-advisory-faq.aspx.
