London Knights open Memorial Cup with shutout win

Michael Simpson notched a 31-save shutout and the London Knights cruised to a 4-0 win over the Drummondville Voltigeurs in their Memorial Cup opener.

The OHL Champions opened the scoring just over eight minutes in off a one-timer from Ruslan Gazizov. The goal came just seconds after a Knights power play ended (perhaps the only thing that didn't go right on Saturday afternoon, as London finished 0-for-4 with the man advantage).

Six minutes later, the Knights doubled their lead on a blast from defenceman Oliver Bonk.

Scoring stalled for the second period, but just seconds into the third, Gazizov notched his second of the game.

Then two minutes later, a Bonk point shot was deflected twice, hitting Landon Sim before Kasper Halttunen was credited with the marker.

Drummondville kept the pressure on, but were unable to get anything past Simpson, despite five power plays on the afternoon.

London will get a day to rest before taking on the 0-1 Moose Jaw Warriors on Monday nightat 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Voltigeurs will take on the host Saginaw Spirit tomorrow evening.
