Man arrested after hours-long standoff with St. Thomas police

Assault and mischief charges have been laid after a police investigation that kept some residents in southeast St. Thomas inside for several hours.

Police were called to the area of Harlequin Court and Renaissance Drive for a family dispute early Wednesday evening. Neighbours in the area were advised to stay inside their homes as a precaution.

Officers remained on scene until roughly 11 p.m. when a man was taken into custody. No injuries were reported. The man was taken to hospital for an assessment as a precaution, police said.

Police have not released any details about the incident, other than to state that there was no risk to public safety.

A 32-year-old man has been charged with one count each of assault and mischief.
