The province's police watchdog is probing a medical emergency in the cells at London police headquarters over the long weekend.
Police arrested a 38-year-old man on an outstanding warrant and for failure to comply with a release order around 5 a.m. on Monday. The man was taken to the detention unit at police headquarters at 601 Dundas St. While there the man experienced a medical emergency and was taken to hospital for treatment of serious, non-life threatening injuries.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and invoked its mandate due to the man's injuries. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
Monday's incident was the second over the long weekend involving London police that spawned an SIU investigation. On Sunday night, the SIU was contacted about the injury of a 30-year-old man during an arrest in east London. Police were called to the area about a neighbour dispute around 6 p.m. While trying to arrest a man for uttering threats, he allegedly took off running. He was found and taken into custody roughly half an hour later. Officers took the man to the hospital where he received treatment for serious, non-life threatening injuries.
London police are not commenting on either incident because of the SIU's ongoing probes.
