The construction of London's bus rapid transit system is hitting another milestone.
The first rapid transit shelter is set to be installed this week. It will be placed at the new northbound Ontario Street station at King Street, near the Western Fair Market.
A large crane is being brought in to help with the installation. To accommodate the machinery, there will be lane restrictions on Ontario Street at King Street until Friday. Sidewalk restrictions and bike lane closures will also be in place.
“We are very excited to see this new shelter in place, which will serve as a future stop in Old East Village connecting Londoners to various local destinations," said Jennie Dann, the city's director of construction and infrastructure services. "For the project team, this means an opportunity to fine-tune any final details before installing additional shelters in the core."
The city plans to install 10 new rapid transit shelters this year, including four downtown and at sections of the east London link corridor.
The shelters will include passenger seating areas, route information, security cameras, enhanced lighting, and tempered glass. They were designed with input from the community, gathered during environmental assessments.
