Alleged impaired hit-and-run driver had child in vehicle

A hit-and-run in St. Thomas that saw a motorcyclist sideswiped led police to a vehicle with a child passenger and an allegedly impaired driver.

The motorcycle was on Wellington Street when it was hit on Sunday. The motorcyclist called St. Thomas police and provided a description of the suspect vehicle and its current location.

When officers arrived the vehicle was stopped with the driver sitting outside with a child, who had been a passenger.

The child was not hurt in the incident, but the motorcyclist suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was determined to be impaired, police said. They were arrested and taken to hospital for medical assessment. While there the driver became combative and assaulted a police officer.

A 37-year-old Aylmer resident is charged with impaired driving, assaulting a peace officer, driving without insurance, careless driving, failure to stop after a crash, and failure to comply with a probation order. They have been released from police custody with a future court date.
