Vehicle found in creek, woman charged with impaired driving

A 45-year-old woman is facing impaired driving charges after a vehicle was found in a creek southwest of St. Thomas.

Elgin OPP began investigating the single-vehicle crash near Argyle and Lanark streets in Southwold Township just before 8 a.m. on Thursday. The vehicle went into the water sometime overnight after veering off Argyle. The driver is alleged to have left the scene, but returned later in the morning to speak with officers.

During that conversation, officers reportedly observed signs of intoxication and administered a roadside sobriety test which the driver failed, police said. The driver was taken to the local police detachment for further testing.

A Southwold woman is charged with driving while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration over 80. Her licence has been suspended for 90 days and her vehicle has been impounded for a week. The woman is scheduled to appear in St. Thomas court on April 30.

No one was hurt in the crash, police said.
