London police shoot teen with 'blunt impact projectile': SIU investigating

The province's police watchdog is investigating after London police used a blunt impact projectile gun on a teenager during a confrontation in the west-end of the city.

Police were called to a domestic incident at a home on Riverside Drive around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. When officers arrived, they confronted a 17-year-old who was on the street and allegedly armed with a weapon. What was described as an "interaction" ensued and officers ended up firing a blunt impact projectile firearm and then a taser at the teen before taking him into custody.

He did not suffer any serious injuries, but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified about the incident due to the use of the blunt impact projectile, a less lethal weapon that uses a collapsible energy absorption system to reduce the risk of serious injury.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case. They are asking anyone who has information or video or photos of the incident to call the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or make contact online at https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
