The crash of a stolen vehicle, just minutes after London police attempted to stop it, has prompted an investigation by the province's police watchdog.
Police officers spotted the vehicle allegedly being driven at a high rate of speed without its headlights on in south London around 12:35 a.m. on Tuesday. Officers, in a marked police cruiser, attempted to stop the vehicle but it kept going.
Roughly five minutes later, emergency crews were called to a crash involving the same vehicle on Osgoode Drive, northeast of the intersection of Adelaide Street and Bradley Avenue. Officers determined the vehicle had been reported stolen shortly before it was spotted by police.
The driver was taken to hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.
A 22-year-old London man has been charged with one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified about the crash and has invoked its mandate. The independent government agency investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
