Electrical issue sparks $400K east London apartment fire

One person had to be rescued from a burning apartment building in east London on Thursday night.

Fire crews were called to the three-storey walk-up on Trafalgar Street at Rectory Street, near Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts around 6:45 p.m. Firefighters used a ladder to save one person trapped on the second floor.

"Crews did a fantastic job knocking the fire down," said Platoon Chief Colin Shewell. "Two residents on the third floor were sheltered in placed until the fire was extinguished. They were never in any danger and were removed from the building when it was safe to do so."

One person was assessed by paramedics and later taken to hospital with unknown injuries, Shewell said. No other injuries were reported.

A London Transit bus was brought in to temporarily shelter tenants forced out of the building. The city's emergency management team established a reception centre at the Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre where ten displaced tenants were provided food, drinks, blankets, and health kits with toiletries. Those tenants have since been provided additional assistance from the Red Cross.

Damage is estimated at $400,000.

Fire inspectors worked through the night to investigate the cause of the blaze. They determined the origin of the fire to be accidental electrical, likely from an appliance plugged into a power bar.
