When the opportunity to team-up with a historic London market and be closer to the city's entertainment district came a-knocking, Classic Rock 98.1 answered.
The radio station, owned by London News Today parent company Blackburn Media, is opening a satellite studio inside the Covent Garden Market on Friday. The new space is located just inside the southwest entrance of the market and features a fully functional studio and podcasting lounge.
"We are thrilled to announce this partnership with Covent Garden Market," said Jon Eisler, the operations manager of Blackburn Media London. "For years we have been broadcasting in the heart of downtown on Richmond Row and now to have a secondary studio in the heart of London's entertainment district is beyond exciting."
A secondary broadcast site had been a long-time want of the radio station, but until now the opportunity at the right location had never presented itself, Eisler said.
"As London's only locally owned and operated media company to partner with such a local staple like Covent Garden Market was really a no brainer for us. This studio will allow us to continue to be front and center for our listeners and our community," said Eisler.
Work to transform the space into a studio had been underway since early January. Now completed, Classic Rock 98.1 will regularly broadcast from the site and record the Craig Needles Podcast Roundtable in the lounge every Friday. Being in close proximity to Budweiser Gardens will also allow the radio station to conduct more live artist interviews prior to concerts.
To celebrate its first day at the new location, Classic Rock 98.1 will be broadcasting live from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Many special guests, including London Mayor Josh Morgan, will be on hand. There will also be giveaways and a chance to win a pair of tickets to see the Eagles at Scotiabank Arena on March 13.
Covent Garden Market General Manager Amy Shackleton touted the new partnership as one that will enrich the vibrant atmosphere of the market.
"Blackburn Media will bring an array of live shows and podcasts to the market, enhancing the entertainment offerings for our visitors," said Shackleton. "With a history dating back to the 1800s in London, Blackburn Media shares our passion for growth and supporting local businesses. Their commitment to our community makes Blackburn Media the perfect addition to the Covent Garden Market. We can't wait to embark on this journey with them.”
Classic Rock 98.1 will also continue to broadcast from its original studio at 700 Richmond Street.
