Trial date could soon be set for hockey players charged with sexual assault

The five 2018 Canadian world junior hockey players charged with sexually assaulting a woman in a London hotel room could find out next month when they will be going to trial.

Lawyers for Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, and Michael McLeod appeared virtually on their clients' behalf in London court on Tuesday. The appearance was to set a date for a judicial pretrial.

The closed door conference, which will allow the Crown and defence to get a judge's input on case issues, has been scheduled for April 3.

Last month, the five accused waived a preliminary hearing, which has sped up the case's movement through the courts. They have opted for a jury trial. A date for that trial is expected to be selected at their next court appearance on April 9.

All five men are charged with sexual assault. McLeod faces an additional charge of sexual assault by being a party to the offence. The charges stem from an alleged sexual assault that reportedly took place inside London’s Delta Armouries hotel after a Hockey Canada gala in 2018. A woman, known only as E.M., reported she was sexually assaulted by a group of players following the fundraiser.

None of the allegations against the men have been proven in court.
