United Way community grants emphasizing impact of poverty

United Way Elgin Middlesex says 44 programs offered by 39 social agencies will benefit from $4.2 million in funding over the next two years.

The agency unveiled its 202402026 Community Fund grant recipients on Wednesday. According to the United Way, the funding allocations include a "renewed emphasis on alleviating the impact of povery on people in our region." It says services that focus on poverty make up about half of the total community investment, up from about one-third of the last round of funding.

"We’re focused on funding programs and services that improve lives and help folks meet their most immediate and pressing needs. At its heart, this is about investing in local people through local organizations that do great work. Together, we’re building a community where everyone has a fair shot at a good life.” said United Way Elgin Middlesex President and CEO Kelly Ziegner.

While the $4.2 million in grants is significant, the United Way says it recieved grant requests totalling $10 million during the open call for applications, suggesting the need continues to be great.

“The volume of grant requests reflects the extent of local need, and we wish we could fund every agency that’s doing excellent work. At the same time, we’re confident that the investments we’re announcing today – all of them made possible through continued donor support – will go a long way towards building a community where everyone matters,” Zeigner said.
