London man's injury not severe enough to move forward with probe: SIU

A probe by the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) into a man's injury in front of a London police officer has been dropped.

The SIU launched the investigation on November 5, 2023 after receiving a report about a man being seriously hurt as police attempted to stop a stolen vehicle.

Preliminary inquiries into the incident by SIU investigators found a man had his vehicle stolen and called police after he and a friend followed it to a fast food restaurant on Oxford Street West. An officer arrived and attempted to block the stolen vehicle by parking their cruiser in front of it. It was at that moment the owner of the stolen vehicle jumped into an open passenger window in an attempt to grab the vehicle's keys.

The person driving the stolen vehicle hit the gas and maneuvered around the police cruiser before taking off from the scene, throwing the owner to the pavement in the process.

The man was taken to hospital where he was cleared of any serious injury, the SIU determined upon review of medical records.

"With there being no ‘serious injury’ within the terms of the SIU mandate, the SIU was without statutory jurisdiction to investigate the incident. The file has been closed," SIU Director Joseph Martino said.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
