Tenants of a St. Thomas apartment building have been displaced by fire.
A blaze broke out at the two-storey building at 8 Jonas Street, near Ross Street, around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Attempts by residents to douse the quick spreading flames before fire crews got there were unsuccessful.
Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from second-storey windows. They were able to quickly bring the fire under control and remained on scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots.
One person who lives in one of the building's units was taken to hospital for treatment of minor burns and smoke inhalation.
Damage to the building is reportedly extensive, although an official estimate has not yet been released.
Victim Services Elgin was brought in to assist the eight displaced tenants.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, fire officials said.
