Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch for a good portion of the region as inclement weather is forecast to start late Friday afternoon.
The watch applies to London, Middlesex County, and Sarnia-Lambton.
The weather agency is calling for heavy snowfall, with as much as two to three centimetres falling per hour at times.
"A weak system will bring a general snowfall of 2 to 5 cm to southwestern Ontario on Friday," read a statement from the weather agency Thursday evening. "Lake effect snow squalls are expected to develop Friday afternoon in the wake of this system and slowly drift eastward Friday night."
London and Middlesex County could see up to as much as 20 to 30 centimetres of snow by Sunday morning. Meanwhile, Sarnia-Lambton could get up to 15 centimetres of snow by Saturday morning.
A winter weather travel advisory was also issued for Sarnia-Lambton Friday morning. The national weather agency said a weak system passing south of Lake Erie will bring snow to southwestern Ontario. Northerly winds off Lake Huron will enhance snowfall for Lambton with total amounts of 5 to 10 centimetres by late Friday afternoon.
Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may also become difficult to navigate with the heavy snowfall.
"Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve," read the statement. "If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone."
