Another teen charged for excessive speeding on Hwy. 401

A Middlesex OPP officer who stopped a 17-year-old for driving 176 kilometres per hour on Highway 401 nearly two weeks ago, has now stopped another teen on the highway allegedly driving even faster.

The officer was on general patrol in the eastbound lanes at Dorchester Road in Thames Centre around 2:10 a.m. on Thursday when a vehicle was clocked travelling 188 km/h. The posted speed limit along that area of the highway is 100 km/h.

The vehicle was stopped without incident, police said.

An 18-year-old from Stoney Creek is charged with careless driving and stunt driving with excessive speed. The accused has also had their licence suspended for 30 days and vehicle impounded for 14 days.

On January 1, another vehicle was stopped along the same spot of the highway after allegedly traveling 176 km/h. In that incident, a 17-year-old from Ingersoll was charged.

"I don't like the way this is trending," OPP Constable Jeff Hare said in a post on X, the social media platform formally known as Twitter.

Hare previously warned that travelling at excessive speeds such as these is not only a risk for the driver, but for everyone else on the highway.

"A collision at these speeds is often catastrophic and usually leads to death. There is no need for speeds like this on our highways and roadways," Hare said.
