Blast of snow slows Thursday morning commute

Drivers trying to get where they were going on the Thursday morning commute were met with slick, snowy conditions that sent multiple vehicles into the ditch.

Snow began falling across the London region around 5:30 a.m. and quickly began accumulating in spots, particularly outside of the city.

Between London and St. Thomas, there were several reports of vehicles in the ditch. A crash on Highbury Avenue just outside of St. Thomas brought traffic to a temporary halt just before 7:30 a.m. There was also a single-vehicle collision on Wellington Road at Highway 3.

On Highway 402 near Colonel Talbot Road, a westbound vehicle rolled. It came to rest on its roof in the median.

None of the collisions resulted in any serious injuries.

"Please slow down and drive according to the road and weather conditions," OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk said. "The snow is falling and the roadways are slick. Reduce your speed, turn on your entire head lighting system so that you are seen, especially on the back roads."

Sanchuk also advised drivers to leave extra space between vehicles.

Environment Canada is calling for up to 4 centimetres of snow to fall across the region before it tapers off Thursday afternoon.

Drivers in the London-area are getting their first real taste of winter weather this week as until now the season had been relatively mild with little to no snow. A winter storm is forecast to arrive Friday night and continue through Saturday. How much snow it will bring remains unclear.
