For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, track cyclists from across the province and the United States will be competing at the Forest City Velodrome.
The south London volunteer run facility will be hosting a three-day race event starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The majority of the racers competing will be between the ages of 14 and 17, however, there will be some as young as 10, according to Forest City Velodrome President Eric Hueston.
"As it stands now we have about 30 racers registered to compete," said Hueston. "They will be cycling at speeds as fast as 44 kilometres an hour on the velodrome's 138-metre wooden track."
He added that the family-friendly races are open to spectators.
"Watching track racing at the Forest City Velodrome is something to behold. There is no other place in North America where you can experience this kind of speed and intensity, right up close,” said Hueston. “This race is a great way for families to spend some quality time together over the holidays and to get a taste for this great and accessible sport.”
The Forest City Velodrome opened in the former London Gardens at 2809 Roxburgh Road in 2005. It is one of only six indoor wooden cycling tracks in North America. In addition to races, the velodrome offers learn-to-ride programs for people of all ages and experience levels.
Tickets to the three-day race event will be available at the door for $10 per race or $30 for the full event.
