Urgent need for toy donations for kids, especially young boys

The Salvation Army London has issued an urgent appeal to the public for toy donations for kids aged 3 to 8.

Wednesday is the last day of distribution for the non-profit's Christmas Assistance Program, which provides toys for children who otherwise would go without this holiday season.

"Throughout the year many families struggle to make ends meet. At Christmas time this becomes even harder and more stressful as they try to keep up with bills and also provide a happy Christmas for their family," said Nancy Kerr, executive director of the Salvation Army London Community and Family Services. "The support they receive from programs like The Salvation Army's Christmas Assistance Program goes a long way to helping them put a smile on their children's face. This could not happen without the generosity of Londoner's who so graciously donate toys to this program."

Kerr stressed there is a particular need for toys for boys aged five and up. She added that possible items that would be of interest to that age group include LEGO, model sets, colouring books and crayons, building toys, walkie talkies, and sports equipment.

Donations can be dropped off until 4 p.m. at the Western Fair District Agriplex at 845 Florence Street.

More than 4,200 families in the London-area signed up to receive assistance through the Salvation Army this Christmas. Distribution began on December 11. In addition to toys, the program provides struggling families with a gift card to buy the fixings for Christmas dinner.

Financial donations can also be made through the Salvation Army's website.
