London man charged with arson

An arson charge has been laid after a man allegedly tried to set fire to the same spot in south London twice in one day.

London police and firefighters were called to a parking lot on Wellington Road South, just south of Bradley Avenue, around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. A citizen had reported a man was trying to set items in the lot next to a building on fire.

Emergency crews arrived to find the suspect had left the area after unsuccessfully lighting the fire.

Three and a half hours later, a citizen called emergency crews back to the same spot after seeing black smoke from a fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze without incident.

No injuries were reported and damage was estimated at $500.

A man matching the description of the suspect provided to police was arrested nearby.

A 29-year-old London man has been charged with arson causing property damage. He was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
