London police officer cleared by SIU

Ontario's police watchdog has cleared a London police officer after a suspect was fatally shot in the summer.

On the morning of July 21, 2023, the London Police Service (LPS) received numerous calls about a man who was armed with a gun.

Police spent several hours searching the area of Glenroy Road, near Pond Mills Road, for a 35-year-old man before locating him in a garage.

There was an interaction between the suspect and the police, which ended with the man being shot.

He was subsequently transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Joseph Martino, said he was "satisfied that the officer acted to defend himself and others from a reasonably apprehended threat."

Martino added that prior to the officer firing his rifle, the man had committed a series of violent acts, including shooting a man in the face.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
