Tenants displaced, cat killed in London house fire

A house fire in London's Blackfriars neighbourhood has killed a cat and caused $150,000 damage.

London firefighters were called to 63 Wilson Ave. just before noon on Friday. A resident had discovered the fire after returning to the three-storey home that has been converted into two apartments.

"Our crews arrived to encounter heavy, thick black smoke," said Platoon Chief Colin Shewell. "We made entry and discovered the origin of the fire in the basement."

Firefighters rescued five cats from the smoke filled units. One of the five later died, Shewell confirmed. The owners were advised to take the remaining four cats to a veterinary clinic to be examined as a precaution.

No injuries were reported.

Smoke damage to the home is widespread, according to Shewell.

"The cause of the fire appears to be electrical in nature and is not suspicious," he added.

At least four people have been temporarily displaced by the fire.
