London firefighters have pegged damage at around $200,000 after a home caught fire in the city’s Blackfriars neighbourhood early Tuesday afternoon.
According to fire officials, at around 11:59 a.m., crews responded to a house on fire on Blackfriars Street near Wharncliffe Road.
“Crews arrived to encounter smoke and fire visible from the exterior of the home. Crews did an aggressive offensive attack, that’s where we go inside and knock down the fire,” Platoon Chief Colin Shewell told LondonNewsToday.ca.
Shewell said firefighters were informed the blaze originated from inside the kitchen of the home. Crews entered the home from the back and were able to contain the blaze before conducting a search of the property.
During a primary search, firefighters located a pet dog inside. The pet was brought out from the home and crews attempted life-saving methods on the animal. Unfortunately the dog was not able to be revived and was deemed deceased.
No other injuries were reported, it is not known if anyone was in the home when the fire broke out. Damage is estimated at around $200,000, Shewell said. A cause has not yet been determined.
Most crews have since cleared the area, some members of the London Police Service remain on scene while the investigation remains ongoing.
