Evicted tenant threatens landlord, repeatedly crashes into tow truck

Charges have been laid in a bizarre incident downtown that saw a landlord threatened with a knife and a tow truck and London police cruiser damaged.

According to police, a man being evicted from an apartment in the area of Maitland and King streets around noon on Sunday began making threats toward the owner of the residence. It is alleged the man was wielding a knife at the time.

He proceeded to get into a nearby vehicle and drove it into a tow truck. The man then reversed, nearly hitting a pedestrian and other nearby vehicles, before crashing into a tree and driving into the tow truck a second time.

The driver of the tow truck tried to drive away from the man's vehicle but was hit a third time.

Another vehicle was hit before police arrived. The tow truck, along with a police cruiser, were crashed into again before another police vehicle arrived and successfully pinned the suspect vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicles involved is estimated at $10,200, police said.

Further investigation found the licence plates on the suspect vehicle were previously reported stolen.

A 68-year-old London man has been charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats of death or bodily harm, failure to stop at a crash, dangerous driving, driving while prohibited, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He was scheduled to appear in London court in relation to the charges on Monday.
