Drivers who rely on Adelaide Street North to get where they are going will need to find an alternate route as of Wednesday.
Adelaide Street between McMahen and Elias streets is being closed for roughly 72 hours to allow crews to lift the first of two new rail bridges into place for the ongoing underpass project.
During the closure, a crane will remove part of the existing temporary rail bridge and place the new rail bridge piece on the south side of the tracks.
London Transit will detour routes 16 and 92 along Piccadilly Street, William Street and Princess Street while the work is being completed.
The roadway is expected to reopen Saturday.
Another closure to lift the second rail bridge into place on the north side of the tracks is planned for late September, according to city officials.
Construction of the four-lane Adelaide Street Underpass began last year. Once completed, it will take drivers under the busy CP Rail tracks, eliminating the estimated 11 to 30 times each day drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are blocked by passing trains. In addition to that, it will provide a reliable route for emergency services and public transit and reduce cut-through traffic in adjacent neighbourhoods. It will take approximately two years to complete construction with finishing touches on the $60 million project expected by 2025.
