Large construction projects blunt economic headwinds for Windsor and London

Windsor and London will see their Gross Domestic Product grow by at least two per cent this year.

The Conference Board of Canada released its forecasts for the 24 biggest cities in Canada, including London and Windsor.

The report says Canadian cities will see muted growth for the rest of this year and next because of inflation and higher borrowing costs, but large construction projects in many will blunt the impact.

"Coast to coast, Canadian cities will largely be impacted by similar factors in the near future," said Principal Economist Jane McIntyre. "Across many cities, local construction projects, as well as international and domestic travel, will generate a boost for the economies, while households and businesses will continue to face headwinds."

For Windsor, the local GDP will grow by 2.2 per cent this year and 1.8 per cent in 2024.

"Various construction projects and manufacturing investments in Windsor are expected to benefit the region for many years, including a new battery plant, updates to Magna's existing facility, and the Gordie Howe International Bridge," said the report.

The forecast for London's GDP is 2 per cent this year and 1.2 per cent in 2024.

"Volkswagen's massive electric vehicle battery plant in St. Thomas will greatly benefit London, while excess savings over the last few years, combined with a tight labour market, have given households the confidence to continue spending on services in the region," the report continued.

London's unemployment rate was 5 per cent in July, while Windsor's was 5.6 per cent.
