A malfunctioning air conditioner is being blamed for an apartment fire in St. Thomas that sent one person to hospital.
Emergency crews received multiple 911 calls about the fire at an apartment building on Talbot Street near Elgin Street just before 6 a.m. on Tuesday. When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the window of a third-floor unit.
The building was evacuated and firefighters extinguished the blaze.
One tenant was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported, St. Thomas police said.
A damage estimate has not been released, but one unit was reportedly gutted.
St. Thomas Fire Prevention officers spent much of the day investigating the cause of the fire.
