Heavy rain delays overnight closure of King Street

Heavy rain that fell across the London region earlier this week is delaying the planned overnight closure of a one block stretch of King Street.

The 11 hour shutdown of King between Wellington and Waterloo streets was originally scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

It has now been pushed back by one day to allow time for the site to dry out. That means the downtown street will now be closed from 7 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday.

During the closure crews will be working to pave and paint lines on the roadway. The work is part of the ongoing bus rapid transit east London link project.

While the closure is in place, London Transit will be detouring bus routes 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 19 and 20 along Ridout Street, York Street, Waterloo Street, and Dundas Street.

People visiting the DoubleTree by Hilton will have temporary two-way access to the hotel from Waterloo Street, according to city officials.

The east London link is a multi-year project that aims to revitalize more than 6 km of road from the downtown to Fanshawe College. It will see the creation of dedicated public transit lanes and the repairing and replacing of aging sewers, watermains and other underground infrastructure.
