London Police deploy spike belt, apprehend car theft suspect

London police say a man has been arrested after they had to use a spike belt in pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

An officer spotted a Chevy Tahoe on Wellington Road near the downtown core just before 2 a.m. on Tuesday, and a check of the license plate revealed the Tahoe had been stolen about a week earlier.

The driver of the vehicle sped away when police tried to pull the Tahoe over, heading south.

Not long afterwards, the same vehicle was seen on Commissioners Road, driving east in the westbound lanes.

Police eventually used a spike belt in the area of Holbrook Drive and Sheffield Boulevard in hopes of stopping the vehicle.

However, the driver continued to try to get away, even with deflated tires.

Police say he eventually got out of the Tahoe and made a run for it on Commissioners Road East near Hamilton Road.

The canine unit was deployed and police were able to locate a suspect who had climbed a fence of a nearby business and was trying to steal another truck.

He started the engine, but police were able to enter the truck and, after some resistance, made an arrest at 2:15 a.m.

A 42-year-old London man faces eight charges, including:

Resist arrest;

Theft of motor vehicle;

Operation while prohibited;

Dangerous operation of a conveyance;

Fail to stop for police/pursuit;

Break enter & theft;

Possession of proceeds of property or thing not exceeding $5000; and

Fail to comply with release order.

He's expected back in court on Friday.
