UPDATE: Crash in St. Thomas claims life of child

Impaired driving charges have been laid after a child was killed, and four others were injured during a brutal crash in downtown St. Thomas late Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, officers responded to the crash just before 5 p.m. on Talbot Street near Caso Crossing.

St. Thomas police say a red pickup truck was travelling west on Talbot when the driver lost control of the vehicle, jumped the curb, and hit five pedestrians.

A woman was taken to London Health Sciences Centre with serious, possibly life-threatening injuries, and three others were treated on scene for non-life threatening injuries. The fifth pedestrian, identified as a child, tragically died from the crash.

The driver has since been arrested and charged with impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm. The accused remains in police custody.

No other details have been made available. The names of those involved are not being released by police to respect the privacy of the families involved.

The area has been closed until further notice while police continue their investigation.
