Another Pride flag stolen - this time in Elgin

Pride flags aren't just being stolen and vandalized in Oxford County.

The Aylmer Police Service announced on Monday its officers are investigating the theft of a Pride flag from the front porch of a home on Talbot Street.

The rainbow coloured flag, which represents and supports members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, vanished sometime overnight on June 11, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the theft to call them at 519-773-3144 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Last week, OPP in Oxford County said Pride flags were stolen and vandalized on Stover Street, Maple Dell Road, and Norwich Road in Norwich Township between June 9 and 13. All of the thefts occurred during the evening hours, police said.

Investigators are reviewing video surveillance in relation to those incidents.

Thefts and damage to Pride flags and banners took off in Norwich Township last year. Two people were arrested, but the charges against them were later dropped. The battle over Pride flags resurfaced in Norwich earlier this year, when the local council voted to ban all non-government flags, including Pride flags, from flying outside municipal buildings. The township also refused to proclaim June as Pride month. A town councillor resigned over the flag ban.
