One in hospital, another in custody after St. Thomas shooting

St. Thomas police have made an arrest in a downtown shooting that left one person clinging to life.

Officers responding to multiple 911 calls about a disturbance at an apartment on Talbot Street near Elgin Street around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday found a 24-year-old suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. That person was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A 39-year-old took off from the scene before police arrived, but was arrested a short time later on Hiawatha Street. A loaded gun was seized, police said.

At this point, no names have been released.

"The investigation is in its early stages and more information will be provided as it becomes available," police said. "There is no risk to public safety."

Investigators were expected to remain at the scene for sometime and asked people to avoid the area.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 519-631-1224 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

This is the second shooting in St. Thomas this year. On January 7, an 18-year-old man was shot inside a home on Palm Street. Police believe that the shooting was a targeted incident.
