Woodstock trucker, business charged after wheels lost on Hwy. 403

More than a dozen charges have been laid against a Woodstock trucker and business after two wheels flew off a trailer heading down Highway 403 in Brantford.

Brant OPP received multiple calls about a traffic hazard on the highway near Wayne Gretzky Parkway just before 9:30 a.m. last Friday. Police determined a tractor-trailer had lost two wheels. The detached wheels did not hit any other vehicles on the highway and no injuries were reported, police said.

Officers found the transport involved and it was taken out of service.

The driver was issued a three-day driver's license suspension after allegedly registering an alert on a roadside alcohol screening device.

A 45-year-old from Woodstock is charged with eight offences including driving a commercial motor vehicle in contravention of conditions, wheel separation of a commercial vehicle, and driving a commercial vehicle with a major defect.

A Woodstock business has also been charged with eight offences in relation to the incident including failure to ensure daily inspection is conducted properly, failure to ensure performance standards are met, permitting operation of a commercial motor vehicle with load not secured as prescribed, and wheel separation of a commercial vehicle.

The accused are scheduled to appear in Brantford court at a later date, OPP said.
