Accused in murder, shooting of police to return to court next week

The London man accused in a Kipps Lane murder that led to a 12-hour police standoff and the shooting of two officers has had his case put over for one week.

Adrian Neil Campbell appeared in court Thursday by video link from the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre. He has been held at the south London jail since his arrest on March 11.

A representative appearing on behalf of Campbell's lawyer Lakin Afolabi told the court they are still waiting for a legal aid application to be completed. He requested a one week adjournment.

Campbell is charged with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. The murder charge relates to the death of 41-year-old Joel Cameron. He was pronounced dead after being found suffering from multiple stab wounds in the stairwell of an apartment building at 621 Kipps Lane around 5 a.m. March 11.

Police responding to the call soon found themselves trying to negotiate with a man who had barricaded himself inside one of the units. Police spent the next 12 hours talking to the man. It was during that time, two officers were hit with the same bullet while in the hallway of the apartment building. Both were taken to hospital where they have since been treated and released.

Campbell was also taken to hospital for treatment of an unspecified serious injury that has led the province's Special Investigations Unit to open a probe into the standoff.

Campbell will return to court next Thursday.

A second man also charged with second degree murder in the killing of Cameron appeared in court on Wednesday. Devon Ferguson-Feit, 28, had his case adjourned for a week.
