Police asked the public to avoid the area near Oxford Street West and Cherryhill Boulevard on Thursday morning as emergency crews respond to a fire in an apartment unit.
The blaze broke out sometime around 10 a.m. on Thursday at a community housing complex at 304 Oxford Street West.
The London Fire Department said crews arrived at the scene and knocked down the fire before 10:30 a.m. Firefighters ventilated the unit due to the heavy smoke and by 11 a.m. the air quality was all clear.
One person was reportedly treated by paramedics at the scene and transported to a local hospital. District Chief Nick Hewetson confirmed that the woman suffered only minor injuries and was taken to hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation.
The fire department said the cause of the incident was unattended cooking. Hewetson believed the woman was using cooking oil on the stove. Oil is a highly flammable material and Hewetson says it should be attended to at all times.
Damages are estimated at $20,000.
