Elgin County OPP respond to 21 collisions during Wednesday snowstorm

Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report there was a "significant number" of collisions during a day of heavy snow this week.

Police say that between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to 21 crashes throughout Elgin County, including two that involved a police cruiser.

There were no serious injuries were reported.

On Wednesday afternoon, Constable Brett Phair  from the Elgin County OPP provided an update via Twitter urging drivers to adjust to road conditions:

Environment Canada had issued a special weather statement days ahead of time warning that a low-pressure system would move through the region and bring 10 - 20cm of snowfall. The statement warned that visibility would be reduced and driving would be made difficult.

On Tuesday, the weather alert was upgraded to a snowfall warning lasting from early Wednesday into the night.

On Wednesday morning, school buses were cancelled due to the inclement weather conditions.

"When driving in winter weather, drivers need to adopt a winter-driving mindset," Elgin County OPP said in a statement.

Police included some advice drivers who find themselves in treacherous winter weather: slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, turn on your lights, and leave yourself extra time for travel.
