UPDATE: Crews work to remove live hydro wires from northwest London road

Police closed a stretch of Oxford Street West Thursday after hydro lines were knocked down in the area.

Just after 4 p.m., officials with the London Fire Department reported live lines were down across the intersection of Oxford Street West and Westdel Bourne. Reports indicate that a boom truck travelling through the area caught one of the lines, pulling several on to the road.

"Upon [our] approach crews witnessed drivers attempting to drive over these live wires," a tweet from the fire department read. "Please listen to emergency crews on scene and avoid this area."

Emergency crews were called to the scene police assisted with closures of the nearby roads going in and out of the city along Oxford Street while hydro workers get the situation under control.

London fire crews started to clear the scene at around 8 p.m., however the intersection remains closed with police on scene overnight until the downed lines can be replaced.
